The reconstruction of the m/s Galeb in an integral part of the EU project “Tourism Valorisation of Representative Industrial Heritage Monuments in Rijeka”.
It is a historically famous ship that began its voyage after the construction in 1938 in the Italian shipyard Ansaldo in Genoa, and which was sunk on November 5, 1944 in the Allied bombing in the port of Rijeka.
After the renovation at the Uljanik shipyard in Pula, in the year 1947 the ship was included in the Jugoslav navy as the Galeb School Ship and gained world fame as the floating residence of Marshal Tito. After Tito's death, the ship was opened for visits by various organizations, schools etc. In the late 1990s, the ship was sold to a Greek shipowner, but he went bankrupt and the ship was never refurbished.
The Ministry of Culture declared Galeb a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia in 2006, and the City of Rijeka bought it in 2009 with the intention of transforming it into a museum. Upon completion of the reconstruction and equipping, the m/s Galeb will have a cultural purpose as a museum, for occasional exhibitions, cinema and creative workshops, and in addition to cultural purposes, Galeb will have a commercial purpose - hostel, bar / restaurant, and souvenir shop.
